⚡AVAS MONDAY – Technical requirements
New EU regulations require electric and hybrid vehicles to be equipped with an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) to ensure the safety of pedestrians and other road users. The AVAS must comply with strict requirements, including minimum and maximum sound levels, temperature range, and CAN-bus control signals of the vehicle. Additionally, every component of the AVAS must be labeled with the manufacturer’s name and an identification number. The regulations stipulate that the sound must be emitted up to a speed of 20 km/h, imitating that of a combustion engine, and consist of at least two-thirds. The sound must be audible from a distance and be at least 56 dB(A) and a maximum of 75 dB(A). The AVAS must also automatically generate a sound when the car is driven at a speed of 1-20 km/h, and while reversing.
The AVAS system must comply with these requirements, and vehicles with a total noise level meeting the requirements of UNECE Regulation No. 138 do not require an AVAS system. The AVAS must generate a continuous sound signal that is recognizable to pedestrians, synchronized with the vehicle’s speed, and comparable to that of a combustion engine vehicle. The implementation of AVAS technology is a significant step towards ensuring the safety of road users and facilitating the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles.
